Making the Journey: I’ve Arrived at KL City.

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I’ve made it to Kuala Lumpur, as everything else went as planned. I guess it’s been a long time since the last time I was here for an official agenda. Other than that, it has always been making leisure trip back to KL, ever since my relocation to Kuching. I’m now back here, with an appointment set in my mind.

I’m counting down the time, and I’m less than 15 hours away from the appointment. I must say, I am nervous. I was quite nervous last night, couldn’t really sleep. Yet, I wasn’t sure what I could do before I hit the sack. I’m posting a few photos from today, until I put away my camera after I reached KL Sentral. It wasn’t convenient to whip up my gear to snap, might as well let it rest in the bag.

I’m still calming my nerve. Wish me luck, I need them.

I’m flying to KL, again.

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

I have to make a return to KL tomorrow, after receiving an email few days back. It was quite a short notice, and I had to come up with quick decisions. I even pondered whether I should make the trip. But really, in the end, there wasn’t much hesitation. I then proceed to purchase my air ticket, then made some preparations and arrangement. I’m now good to board the plane tomorrow.

Because of this, I had to neglect my blog update for a while. I don’t wanna miss out on anything when I board the plane on Monday. Anyways, I will be in KL from 15 to 21 June. So, KL, here I come again. I hope things will work well for me. I shall pray hard. :)

Spring/Summer Fashion Show @ Mid Valley Marathon

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

It was such a coincident that it was fashion weeks around Klang Valley during my visit to KL, and I had my first taste on fashion show photoshoot in KL. Never in my previous time in KL, I had i chance to shoot fashion show. Robin couldn’t hide his exciting, repeatingly praise how good the fashion shows are in KL.

So, off we were to Mid Valley, where the fashion shows are held. Ruby text me couple days earlier, insisting that I should be there for the fashion show that time. So, the anticipation was quite high for the show. In fact, there were fashion shows going on in both Mid Valley’s centre court and The Gardens Mall. However, the timing was quite tight. After every show in Mid Valley, The Gardens Mall will follow with the ones there. So, both Robin and me, along with few other photography enthusiasts were on frenzy running back and forth two places.

I was rather clueless on how I should shoot the show. It was pretty much my first time in KL, and I wanted to try out different method shooting a fashion show. Since the models were constantly moving on the runway, I decided to track the movement in frame with AI Servo. I also switched to Av mode for shooting, while toning down the EV value to – 0.3 EV or – 0.7 EV, for faster shutter speed. I left the aperture set at its widest configuration.

However, my main mistake was, to use multiple AF point with AI Servo. The focusing and tracking was rather disastrous, as there are times when the outcome didn’t turn out like how I would have imagined.

There were some side events before the main show started. Align with the Stadium Emirates theme, they have set up few game stations just next to the stage. Top shoppers in Studio R were invited to play in their EA Sports FIFA game on PS3, projected on Samsung LCD TV. There were even live commentary by the emcee that day. Hehe. I reckon he is also a hardcore Barclays’ Premier League.

The lens I chose to start with was my EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM, so on a 1.6x cropped body. With that, the focal length would be equvalent to 144-480mm, so it’s pretty long for where I was standing. It was quite difficult to find a good spot to compose my shot, as I was standing by the side of the stage. I didn’t capture the stage design in this show, will show it in the upcoming posts.

Since I was not shooting from the photographer’s stage, most of my shot would have obstructions in the frame, especially when I try to get whole body framing.

So, most of my shot from that day had to be cropped, at least a bit. There was only a handful which didn’t require any cropping.

So there goes show #1 in Midvalley, after this show, we rushed to The Gardens Mall for the next show. However, I will get all shows I shot in Mid Valley done first before moving on to The Gardens. I had three shows in my bag that day.

When Allen meets Wendy’s

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

After the Diva Production show, Robin introduced Wendy’s to me, and boy, Wendy’s heaven! Wendy’s new (at least it’s new to me) fast food chain restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. Their menu is not much different from other fast food restaurants. They serve burgers, fries, salads, beverages etc.

Robin's pancake at work.

According to their Wikipedia entry, Wendy’s made a comeback to Malaysia mid 2008, and currently has 8 restaurant operating across Klang Valley.

Malaysia
Wendy’s made its comeback to Malaysia mid 2008 and currently has 8 restaurants, located at Sunway Pyramid Mall[29] and Jaya ONE in Petaling Jaya, IOI Mall in Puchong, and Jalan Sultan Ismail, Mont’ Kiara Banyan Walk, Aeon AU2 Setiawangsa in Kuala Lumpur and recently in Berjaya Times Square, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

I think I ordered a 1/2 lb double with cheese. It came with fries and 1 carbonated soft drink.

The burger was wrapped in a silver/chrome/aluminum wrapper, when I held it, I could feel the difference it has in weight. It’s pretty heavy compared to burgers of other restaurant. I think it is comparable to Burger King’s Whopper.

Burger unwrapped. It  may not look very pretty in this picture, but I can assure you, the smell was alluring.

The patty is different from the regular burgers you get in any other restaurant. In Wendy’s, they made the patties soft and juicy. When you bite on it, you could feel the juice from the patty in your mouth, coupled with the flow of the melted cheese. Sinful, but heaven.

Wendy’s burger is one of the juiciest and tastiest ones I have ever tried. Thumbs up.

Diva Production Makeup Show @ Sg. Wang – 17/04/2009

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Time to post my pending posts ages ago, particularly my KL trip back in April. I was in KL from 16 – 22 April. This post came from Day 2 of my trip. I was supposed to meet my friend Ruby in the morning, but she was caught up with last minute appointment, so we had to delay our meet up. I noticed there were people setting up the stage at Sungei Wang Plaza earlier in the afternoon, so, I decided to stay back a little to find out what they have for the day. I called Robin up, and he was nice enough to make it to the area despite he just reached home from work.

The crowd on the street at Bukit Bintang.

Apparently, the show that day was a makeup show by Diva Production, showcasing the student’s work. I must say, it was something pretty different from the typical fashion show. The show focuses on the makeup, instead of the wardrobe on the model.

EOS 50D + EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM @ iso320

EOS 50D + EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM @ iso320

Prior to the show, the even kick-started with a private party, where the invited guests are served with refreshments. The guests were all dressed up gorgeously. I tried the setting for the shoot that night, and I was struggling to get the setting right. I intended to use Manual setting for the shoot, and I started with adjusting the ISO setting, tried from ISO320 to ISO800.

EOS 50D + EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM @ iso640

EOS 50D + EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM @ iso640

My lens isn’t of a wide aperture lens. In fact, it’s floating aperture takes away my option at the tele end. My best bet was at f/4.5 the largest aperture at wide end. Then again, it was my bad for not attaching my speedlite to the camera.

EOS 50D + EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM @ iso800

So, in return, I had to salvage some of the photos by turning them into Black and White shot. LOL! It works most of the time. :P

I wish I can buy that lens soon. :D

The Emcee of the night.

The makeup show had few themes, and it started with lines and cage. Hmm. I can’t remember what the theme was exactly, as I did not have any press release material with me. I was there to observe the event.  :P So, here onwards, I’ll let the photos do the talking.

Update from KL

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

A short update from KL. I’ve been unable to access to the Internet as much as I would want to, hence lack of update here on my blog. I didn’t manage to schedule any post prior my trip to KL.

Corn Tower - One Twin Missing

I snapped this shot between Ampang Park LRT Station (entrance) and Nikko Hotel. The other twin of this mighty landmark is hiding shyly behind other concrete jungle.

I will be back to Kuching soon, soon enough. There are few things to show from KL, and I can’t wait to show them here.

p/s: I can’t wait to get back and start my new chapter of life.
