Replacing parts.

April 2008, that was when I bought my first Apple product. A 13-inch Macbook white, running on a Core 2 duo. Together with my set of Canon equipment, I have since started a wonderful journey with them.

Three years on, I have since replaced a few parts on the Macbook, as well as upgrading the parts. Hard disk drive, RAM (Memory), batteries, and most recently the power adapter.

December has been a packed month for me. I cannot afford any downtime on production, especially with so many deadlines to meet. As what Murphy’s law states – anything that can go wrong will go wrong. My power adapter died at this nick of time. To make things worse, there wasn’t any stock available in Kuching at that time, not even in Miri and Kuala Lumpur (part of it).

Thankfully, I have managed to loan an adapter while waiting for them to restock. I managed to get this 60W adapter from Switch last week. Magsafe Adapter is available in three different specs, 45W, 60W and 85W, which are suited for different type of Macbook, from Macbook Air, to 13 inch Macbook and 13 inch Macbook Pro, as well as 15 and 17 inch Macbook Pro.

One of the reasons I love my hometown

I left Kuala Lumpur almost 5 years ago, and I left for the city I love most this far in my life. There are things which the other two cities I have lived in before couldn’t really match with. And, this is one of the reasons why..

One of the reasons why I love my hometown

Beautiful sky and cloud formation is a common sight here in Kuching.

It’s just simply beautiful to look up into the skies sometimes, especially in Kuching.

‘Because we are doing wholesale..’

Pikom PC Fair has, once again, come to Kuching city. The same old venue, the same old complaints.

Never mind about the location. Never mind about the crowd.

It was not my intention to take a step in to the PC Fair at Permata Car Park Building this year, not after the disappointment, and inconvenience I get from the PC Fair annually. However, a friend gave me a buzz on SanDisk Extreme CF being on sale in the fair. It is odd as it’s rare to have dealers/vendors bringing in SanDisk here in Kuching. In the past years, they prefer other brands, such as Kingston or KingMax over SanDisk. I presumed the cost to bring it the other brands is a lot cheaper if compared to SanDisk.

My friend wanted me to compare the online price, which we always use as a reference, to the one on sale in PC Fair. 8GB SanDisk Extreme 60MB/sec CF costs MYR 315.00 on Shashinki.com, and that should be the street price in Kuala Lumpur. However, this particular vendor, they listed this very same item at only MYR 199.00. It’s about MYR 100 difference, which is a lot. Price in Kuching is almost never cheaper than in KL. Judging from the price only, there are only two possibilities I can think of:

  1. Fake CF; or
  2. Grey Product

So, I’ve decided to pay a visit to this PC Fair, to see what the deal is. And when I was there, there are few suspicious facts raised some doubts, especially towards the vendor’s credibility. Here’s a summary of what I think is suspicious:

  • Why the difference in pricing (even if compared to KL)?  - This dude (probably angered by my friend’s first question whether if the product is a genuine product or not) insisted they are doing wholesale, therefore they have more margin to play with, so that they can sell at a lower price.
  • Product without box – I was shocked when they first showed us the CF card. It was a naked product, without box! And again, we asked why without box, and again, they insisted they’re doing wholesale. I seriously don’t buy that! For one, I know for sure they’re not the distributor for SanDisk, it’s someone else.  Secondly, their other products (of SanDisk) come with proper box/packaging! But why just this item?
  • Later in the day, my friend returned to check on their item again. He wanted to test the item on his camera. However, this return trip brought yet another shocking discovery. They hiked up the price, up to MYR 288.00. Despite marking at a higher selling price now, they are still selling without the box. It sounds really weird to me. Mind you, at this point, it’s almost end of 2nd day of the 3-days-fair. How could you just realized that you’ve marked wrong pricing after almost 2 full days?

Now, the main points I want to highlight is the vendor may not be honest with us. We, as consumer, may fall victim to their illegal trading. I mean we could buy a fake product, if not a non-legit product. I mean, it could be a smuggled good, or maybe a stolen good. We just wouldn’t know!

Now I am pondering whether if I should reveal the company’s name. All points I have highlighted here are just mere assumption. There’s no firm evidence to  support my theory here. Anyhow, I would like to remind you all to be extra careful when purchasing products like this. As a photography enthusiast myself, the last thing I want is corrupted images after a photography outing/assignment, as result of using fake CF. Or, maybe when the CF dies on me, I am not able to claim warranty due to the non-legit product.

I have also reported or brought this to SanDisk’s attention, I hope they can clarify for me soon. If there is update, I shall post it here.

HDR on a Sunday

I’m posting an entry on HDR image on this Sunday. This weekend is a bit too taxing for me. I sat for an exam, which is called Perperiksaan Khas Memasuki Perkhidmatan Gred 41. I actually repeatedly wrote that line over and over again the whole day! This exam is sort of a pre-requisite exam for those who applies for a job in the Government sector. You do the registration online at their website (www.spa.gov.my), I had hard time filling in the form as they only made Bahasa Melayu version available. And, yesterday marked the first time in a decade, easily, since I last wrote an essay in BM. I somehow managed to put in for just about 300 words! Man, it was even tougher than sitting for a Biology paper!

Anyways, back to the HDR image, there isn’t anything fancy here, just a simple method. I took three exposures on three frames, via the AEB (Auto Exposure Bracket) function in the camera. When you’ve set your designed exposure value (EV), you will shoot three frames from the camera. Here, my EV taken are -1ev, -3ev and +1ev. Then I generate the HDR image via Photomatix Pro. You then adjust the setting within Photomatix Pro according to your own preference.

On other notes, the gears I used to shoot this were: EOS 50D + Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6, without tripod. I shot in High-burst (continuous) mode to shoot the three frames continuously. That sort of eliminated the need of a tripod, as the lighting at that time is still sufficient to shoot hand held, even at -3ev.

March Madness

I haven’t been active with my blog lately, and there is reason for that. March is usually a mad season for most people, especially students in colleges/universities. That is when their assignments due, and final exam date draws nearer.

I had to push a few entries behind a bit because of what is happening in March. I have been with some preparatory works, mostly, but I have had a few of those executed. Here are a summary of what I have done lately:

  1. Moved allenang.com to new hosting – this will give more storage space for allenang.com.
  2. Redirect www.allenang.com to www.allenang.com/blog, which means the blog will be the default landing page. This is a temporary measure until I get the new structure rolled out.
  3. I’ve also started a facebook page, however that still require quite a lot of tuning and tweaking, still quite a distance from being officially launched.

As for the rest of other updates, it will be on the next entry, again.
