FlipFlops Beach Carnival 2011: Della 丁噹 Mini Concert

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

The first Flipflops Beach Carnival set of a blast in Kuching. Events Horizon presented the inaugural beach carnival, with their supporting partners BarZing and also Damai Puri Resort & Spa, whom also are the venue sponsor.  The 3-days-beach carnival started with a high note, with Della 丁噹’s mini concert as the highlight of the evening. Day 2 saw international DJs setting the blast off in the Rave Party. The carnival had Charity Run, and also some mini events going as their finale for the weekend.

Guitarist from a local band Mystical Mirage performing prior Della making her stage appearance.

Della 丁噹 made a trip to Malaysia, all the way from Taiwan to promote her latest album. She is best known for her powerful vocal, and amazing live performance. I was glad I had the chance to see her performing live for once! Prior to Della’s performance, we had a few of the local rock bands entertaining the crowd. The crowd turnout was very positive despite the fact that the State Election was due the following day. Political parties were gathering their pace in the final attempt to rally for votes.

Mystical Mirage's lead vocalist Ken wow the crowd with his talent.

The local bands featured that night include, Mystical Mirage and SLAP. Then it was followed by the gospel group from Blessed Church, who took the center stage, with their Gospel songs and dances, which was led by the famous Pastor GT Lim. Della was introduced right after Blessed Church’s performance, and boy, she heated up the night alright. Her performance lasted for about an hour or so.

The Mitsubishi Dakar Rally Experience with Hiroshi Masuoka

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Some 2 weeks ago, The Mitsubishi team rocked Kuching by staging a 2-days carnival roadshow in Kuching, featuring a 2-time Dakar Rally champion — Hiroshi Masuoka.

The two-days carnival showed no shortage of excitement. The organizers offered mud-splashing fun, as well as a mini live concert staged at night. The highlight for this event is surely on the Dakar Rally experience with Mr. Hiroshi Masuoka.

Flying Mud! (Cropped from original shot)

I was there two days, went through both the dry and wet condition. I took the ride on Pajero Sports the first day, but didn’t take any action shots. I returned the following day despite the rain, however, I was a little too late as the registration was closed. There was no ride for me on wet condition. I think it should be awesome.

Both the Pajero Sports and Triton used in the rounds have not been modified at all. The specifications in the cars used are exactly like those that came out straight from showroom or assembling plants. The only change made was on the wheels. They put on the sets which are more suitable for the challenging off-road terrain.

Also, these cars are of automatic transmission. That’s all about the automobile. As a matter of fact, that’s all I know about cars. I’m not a car person. So I’ll move on to the photography part of the entry.

The Mitsubishi Dakar Rally Experience

Mr. Hiroshi Masouka looked on as he prepared for swapping into a 'fresh' car.

Since it was cloudy on a wet weather while shooting these series, I had to change the WB on the camera in order to get a more interesting image color. If I were to shoot on AWB mode, the image would be pretty pale, as the AWB tends to favor cooler color at such condition. Therefore, I opted to go for between Cloudy and Sunny, which would give me a temperature between 5200k (Sunny) and 6000k (Cloudy).

The Mitsubishi Triton drifting.

I only had EF 70-200mm f/4L USM mounted on EOS 50D for this shoot. I switch between aperture priority mode (Av) and full manual mode (M). For panning shots, I dialed my mode to manual mode to gain full control over on my camera. I had my aperture set between f/6.3 to f/11 depending on the lighting at the time. I had to push towards high ISO sensitivity for the weak available light on a cloudy day, and it was around 6pm at the time of shooting.

The Mitsubishi Dakar Rally Experience

Call for rescue. The Triton was stuck on the muddy track. They had to send out a rescue team to retrieve the vehicle.

I also had mix of AI Servo and One shot focusing while shooting the action shots. With EOS 50D, I find it challenging to do AI Servo tracking with just 9-point on the camera.

It was a great experience with both the ride and shooting the actions. Now I wonder if I should post the video I recording with my mobile phone while I was in the ride.

Go Bald 3

A year on, Go Bald has returned. After “Go Balder Than Ever”, SCCS and the team are bringing back the head-shaving charity event. This year will be their 3rd edition.

Go Bald 3 Press Conference at Hilton Kuching.

Go Bald 3, the 2011 edition will carry a sub theme — One Heart, One Act. I was part of the team for Go Bald 2 last year, we managed to get 405 registered head shaved (26 of whom were ladies), while raising more than RM 440,000. We had many supports from all over the places, such as Miri, Sibu, KL etc.

President of SCCS, Mr. Gary Ho, addressed the media.

Things are going to be a little bit different this year. For the first time ever, Go Bald 3 will happen both in Miri and Kuching! Miri leg is happening on May 1, while Kuching leg will be on May 15. This year, SCCS and Go Bald team aim to raise RM 1.5 million, where Kuching sets the RM 1 million target, and Miri takes aim at RM 500,000. The fund raised will go towards funding for SCCS’ new centre, where the groundbreaking will take place somewhere in April 2011.

Just like last year, they held a First Shave session right after the Press Conference., to officially kickstart the charity event. The Spring shopping mall again are the venue sponsor, while Richard and Iris Salon wil be sponsoring the shaving crew this year.

Reflection

Reflection, working with Diana of Runway Mode during a shooting session at Eyes of Lumix photography workshop.

I attended the Eyes of Lumix photography workshop, which is organized by Lumix G-Team. This shot actually won me a Panasonic 4GB SDHC, Class 4, under the Creative Composition category.

Thanks to the organizer, and everyone else who made the event a success. We’re certainly looking forward to such events in time to come.

Catwalk for Canine on Sunday

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Finally, I manage to get a short break from the recent packed schedule, even just for a day. I needed this badly. It’s been a while since I last spent my Sunday, hanging out with friends, and not doing much.

I was given buzz on the 289th MKA All Breed Championship show, which is held at Kenyalang Park Community Hall on 25 April 2010. Hounds are interesting species, men’s best friend, as they call them. They can be such intelligent and great companion to men. This time round, I geared up as light as possible, as it isn’t an assignment. It’s just a casual outing. So, I only brought out EOS 50D, together with EF 70-200mm f/4L USM, and the prime EF 50mm f/1.8 II.  I even left my 580EX II at home!

The challenge to shooting the hounds in the hall is mainly the lighting issue within the hall. Subjects aren’t well lit, at least by photography standard. Due to that, I had to shoot with ISO 3200 all the way, and with my widest aperture at f/4 on my 70-200mm. It’s still tough.

Go BALD!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

I’m officially IN! Yes, I’m officially pledging to GO BALD!

Pledge to Go Bald

Pledge to Go Bald

However, I am pledging to Go Bald with only one condition, which is to help to raise fund for this Go Bald campaign. I hope to contribute to some donation to SCCS, helping those in need. So, guys, please help me to raise fund. I have a pledge card myself, so you can come to me if you want to make donation to SCCS. I have also given my friend, Anna Bella (or commonly know as Annna or annna.net, a pledge card too. Therefore, you can also contact her to make some donation.

My Pledge Card Number

My Pledge Card Number

So what is the target? Well, it’s pretty simple for my own pledge card, #0155. We have 21 rows on the pledge card, so, let’s just put RM50 for each row. 21 rows of RM50 would give me a total amount of RM1,050. So, for each pledge card I shared (in this case, Anna’s pledge card is for me to go bald), I set the same target too. Both our pledge cards should hit approximately RM2,100. So if there’s a third in the picture, I’m raising the target to RM3,150. The amount isn’t much, but at least that what I can do to help to raise fund.

Game on! My name on the pledge card.

Game on! My name on the pledge card.

So, lend your hand by helping those in needs. If you can, do come to the event day, and show moral support by going bald on stage. I will be there, for sure!
